Long . . . because school started.
Dark . . . because cranky kids waking up at the ass-crack of dawn is NOT FUN.
Stormy . . . eh . . . well, not really. I just included it because it sounded good in the post title.
I never got a chance to snap a "Back to School 2013" photo. See, the older 2 leave by 7:15 AM . . . and the little 2 don't leave until 8:25 AM. Last year, I snapped a photo when they got home. I had to make the older 2 stay in their school clothes for a bit, but that was okay. See, the older 2 used to get home at 3:30 PM, while the little 2 would walk in the door around 4:20 PM.
But that was last year.
This year, my 13-yo doesn't come home from school. He has football practice every day after school, and needs to be picked up around 6:30 PM. My 14-yo stays after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for band . . . I have to pick her up at 4:30 PM. So all week, there was never a chance to take a picture.
I think I may make them dress up for me tomorrow -- though there's no school, of course -- just so I can preserve the moment on film.
Next year, I won't even remember that it was staged. I know this for a fact, because up until my kids reminded me, I'd thought that last year's picture was taken in the AM . . . not after school.
So, yeah . . .
Anyhoo . . . my 13-yo stays after school for football. This is his first year playing school ball, and not mini football. At 3:00 PM, after classes are dismissed for the day, the 7th, 8th, and 9th grader football players all get together in a lecture hall at the high school for a mandatory 45-minute Study Session.
Then, they go and have their actual practice from 4:00 PM until 6:30 PM.
Isn't that awesome?!? He gets all his homework done during Study Session, and I don't have to nag him about doing it in the evening, when he and I are both tired and cranky! Awesome.
So, my 13-yo isn't done with his day until 6:30 PM, every day of the week. My 14-yo has her practices on Mondays & Wednesdays, from 3:00 PM until 4:30 PM. The 7-yo has cheer practices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
See where that leaves me? Playing taxi all afternoon!!
I don't mind. I get to relax all day, after all. That is, if by "relax" you mean laundry, housework, and making dinner, of course.
There's a mom who helps me out, though! Her boy and my 13-yo played mini football together, and now they're on the school team together. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, she picks up her boy AND my boy at the school field after practices around 6:45 PM, and she meets me at the mini football field, where I am with my 7-yo for her cheer practices. That way, I don't have to leave cheer practice halfway through, pick up the 13-yo, and run back to pick up the 7-yo. I can actually sit back and relax for the hour during cheer practice! It's positively delightful!! I love this mom.
Of course, the first time she did it, the relative "relaxation" was ruined by my nagging guilt, knowing there were other things that needed to be done, and there I was, sitting on my ass. So, I've decided that I'm going to use that hour to my advantage, and walk around the field instead of sitting on my ass.
We'll see if it actually happens this upcoming week, LOL!
Actually, now that I'm thinking of it, it WON'T happen on Tuesday. Tuesday is Game Day for the 7th & 8th grade football team.
Maybe Wednesday or Thursday.
Friday was the first Varsity Football Game of the year . . . which, of course, means that it was the first marching band performance for my 14-yo. The football team sucked, and they lost . . . a lot. But the band looked and sounded fantastic! I reprised my role of Band Announcer . . . a (nonexistent) title that was stripped from me before last season, when the old band director decided that he didn't like me anymore. But the NEW & IMPROVED Band Director likes me, so I was reinstated with full, retroactive pay. (I'm lying . . . there's no pay -- full, retroactive, or otherwise. I'm just being weird.)
Saturday was the first 9th Grade Football Game of the year . . . and my 8th-grade boy was asked to suit up for the team, so he was there! He's 2nd string, or something like that . . . which is neat! We didn't expect that he'd play at all . . . but he did! He caught a 30-yard pass and came within 3 yards of scoring a touchdown. It was very exciting. It was his one and only play for the day, but it was a GREAT one! (I don't count his 2nd play . . . he went in during the last 14 seconds of the game so he and the rest of the team could take a knee, since his team was winning.) His football team won . . . 30-22. And the band doesn't go to those games, so I actually got to watch the football! It was pretty cool!
And now that we're all caught up . . . I leave you with a picture of my boy, about to catch that pass I talked about. (He's in the blue!)
